POST OPERATIVE HOME CARE
. has undergone a general anaesthetic today and had a surgical procedure performed. In order for your furry friend to make a fantastic recovery, we ask you that you adhere to the following post-operative instructions.
- Please ensure that . is kept in a warm, quiet indoor area to recover from the anaesthetic. It is expected that theywill be drowsy tonight and tomorrow, so please allow them rest.
- . may have some water tonight and a small, soft food meal. If they are still hungry a few hours later and novomiting has occured, another small meal may be fed.
- Please do not continue to offer food if any vomiting occurs. Continual vomiting needs veterinary advice. Please callJacobs Well Vet 5546 1411.
EXERCISE
- We strongly recommend . has strict rest for the next 7 days following a surgical procedure. This includes runningand jumping.
- After 5 days, short leadwalks for no more than 10 minutes is acceptable for stimulation to reduce destructivebehaviour such as digging and chewing.
- Please do not allow . to lie in the dirt or mud.
SUTURE CARE
- no licking of the surgery site! This does not encourage healing. It actually may lead to infection and also willencourage chewing on the sutures.
- Persistent licking will require an Elizabethan collar.
- Please monitor the healing process and check the sutures twice a day. Any swelling, redness, heat or dischargeneeds to be reported to the surgery.
- Please do not bathe or allow your pet to swim until sutures have been removed. (10-14 days post operatively)
You may notice that the fur has been clipped around the incision site. This is to maintain a clean, sterile area for surgery to be performed. The hair on . legs may also have been clipped and this is for intravenous anaesthetics and drugs to be administered. This will grow back in a few short weeks.
