Cruciate Repair (De Angelis and TPLO)

A torn cruciate ligament in the knee is one of the most common orthopaedic injuries in dogs, leading to pain, arthritis and lameness. We offer two main surgical repair options:

De Angelis (Lateral Suture)

A strong nylon suture is placed outside the joint to mimic the ligament’s function, providing stability while the body heals. This is generally best for smaller or less active dogs.

Recovery typically progresses over several weeks. In the initial 2 to 3 weeks, the individual may occasionally need to carry the leg. By the 8week mark, only controlled exercises, such as short leash walks, should be undertaken. After 2 to 3 months, a gradual return to normal function is expected, allowing for a more active lifestyle.

TPLO (Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy)

The shape of the tibia is surgically adjusted to change the way forces act on the knee, eliminating the need for the cruciate ligament altogether. TPLO is often preferred for larger, heavier, or highly active dogs as it can provide stronger, longer-term stability.

The recovery timeline for TPLO surgery is structured to ensure optimal healing. In the initial four weeks, it is crucial to enforce strict rest, avoiding any activities that involve running or jumping. Following this period, from weeks four to eight, controlled leash walking becomes permissible, allowing for gradual movement while still prioritizing recovery. By the three to six-month mark, pets can begin a gradual return to their normal activities, ensuring a safe transition back to their regular routines.

In general, most dogs begin to lightly place their affected leg on the ground within a week and typically regain full function within four to six months.
