Foreign Body Removal
Objects such as toys, bones, fabric, or string can become lodged in the stomach or intestines, causing blockages that prevent food and water from passing. Left untreated, this can quickly lead to severe dehydration, intestinal damage, or rupture.
Signs of an intestinal foreign boy include vomiting, salivation, loss of appetite, lethargy, dehydration, abdominal pain and discomfort.
Surgical treatment options include Gastrotomy (creating an opening in the stomach) or Enterotomy (creating an opening in the intestines) to remove the object and repair any associated damage. In cases where a section of the intestinal wall is significantly damaged, a procedure called Enterectomy, involving the removal of the unhealthy portion , may be necessary.
In some cases, it is possible to remove the foreign object using endoscopy method. It involves using a long, flexible scope with a video camera at the end. The veterinarian is able to pass the scope down oesophagus into the stomach. Once the foreign body is located, specialized tools are used to grasp and carefully remove it through the mouth, all while the pet is under general anaesthesia.
This method is often less invasive and has a shorter recovery time.
If you suspect that your pet has ingested a foreign object and is showing any of the mentioned symptoms, please contact us promptly on 0755155935 to seek appropriate care.
